We often hear about how unromantic prenuptial agreements are. It makes sense, of course, that this type of agreement makes people uneasy. Couples basically have to discuss the topic of divorce before they have even tied the knot.
While to some degree, it makes sense why individuals with few assets don’t end up wanting a prenuptial agreement, it can be a bit worrisome if a couple with significant assets decides to forgo a prenup. A divorce can have a huge impact on the assets an individual is left with after all is said and done.
Take a recent example: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The famous actor married his wife some 15 months ago and now the couple is headed toward divorce. Heard filed for divorce from Depp, citing irreconcilable differences. She has already asked for spousal support.
The biggest and most concerning issue in this marriage is that the two did not have a prenuptial agreement. To some degree, it’s in Depp’s favor that the marriage was short. Legal professionals say the two will likely settle out of court in order to keep their personal life private.
The biggest issue to consider in this divorce is any money made by Depp and Heard during their marriage. Actor Depp makes a substantial income from his profession. Legal professionals say it may be in his best interest to not drag out the divorce and instead settle on paying her a certain sum for a handful of years.
Every divorce will have issues related to property division that will have to be sorted out. In most cases, those issues will not have such a hefty price tag as that of Depp’s case, but the assets involved in any divorce, no matter how many or few, are important to the financial future of those involved.
